151.01 Understanding How Your Utility Works – Basics of Generation, Transmission & Distribution

This course is designed to acquaint non-technical utility employees with the basics of their industry from the generation to the distribution of electricity. The course places emphasis on understanding various words, terms, and phrases unique to the electric power industry. Participants will gain a clear insight into how electricity gets to the end-use customer.  Some of the topics covered in this course are:

  • The basic science of electricity and why it exists
  • The fundamental methods of electrical generation and how an electrical generator works
  • How electricity, once generated, is transmitted long distances
  • How electricity is transmitted and distributed to homes and businesses
  • Understanding various electrical terms and devices: i.e. transformers, capacitors, switches, three-phase service,
  • The function of electrical metering devices including automated metering
  • How outages are detected and restored
  • Tour around the substation yard at the Training Center. (Please bring hard hat & wear appropriate shoes for walking.)

This course also includes up-to-date information on current happenings in the industry including the push to renewable energy, net metering, distributed generation and more. Attendees will also be provided an overview of the industry in their state and provided with the skills to answer questions from consumers concerning these aspects of electric service.
